ARC Innovator – Volunteer and Community Engagement Strategist
Church World Service
ARC Innovator Title:
Volunteer and Community Engagement Strategist
Who is the nonprofit partner?
Church World Service is a faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. In Jersey City, CWS provides services to refugees and asylees. CWS Jersey City opened in 2015 to provide services to refugees and asylees in the Garden State. Programming includes case management, job placement, job readiness training, advocacy, women-specific programming, ESL tutoring, and provision of in-kind donations.
What skills or interests do I need to do the project?
Previous experience in volunteer coordination, community development, or in a refugee resettlement agency is helpful. Understanding of the current state of refugee resettlement and immigration policy is necessary, along with a willingness to learn about detailed program requirements. Creativity and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders is a must. Knowledge of a second language is a plus.
What’s the project all about?
CWS Jersey City is a small office that administers resettlement services to refugees and asylees. With the changes to refugee arrival patterns and shifting interest of the volunteer community, CWS Jersey City is seeking assistance with developing a robust volunteer and community engagement strategy to implement through 2021.
These impacts will help further the organization’s mission by providing clarity to CWS Jersey City staff for the coming years, and hopefully providing new ideas on how to engage volunteers and community members in ways that are beneficial to CWS clients. CWS would like the focus of their volunteer program to shift away from simply engaging volunteers for the sake of engagement towards creating meaningful opportunities to improve refugee and asylee lives through measurable outcomes. The biggest challenge will be generating “buy-in” from the existing community around any changes to CWS Jersey City’s engagement strategy.
What are the project objectives and deliverables?
The goal of this project will be to guide CWS staff on how to ensure volunteers and potential donors are invested in the mission of the CWS Jersey City office and recognize appropriate methods for supporting the office.
Specific deliverables will include the following:
- Social media strategy for the local office
- Volunteer recruitment process review
- Training materials to provide to volunteers
- Communications plan for volunteers and community supporters.
Who from the organization will provide me with support?
Courtney Madsen, Office Director, will provide support on the project.
How long will the project take?
It is anticipated that the project will take 10-12 weeks.
Where will I complete the project?
The work can be done onsite or remotely.
